LTL Freight vs Movers

LTL Freight vs Movers

Tuesday, November 01, 2022

When moving, there are a variety of service options for you to choose from. It all depends on what your needs are and how involved you would like to be with your move.

The cheapest (and probably most complicated) is to do things yourself. Long days packing stuff into your car or your rental moving van can keep you from doing things that are more important such as spending time with your family or preparing for your new life in a new space.

That's where moving companies come in. There is a wide variety of moving companies with a ton of different levels of competencies and services to choose one. One choice that can help you narrow down the field of prospective movers is what style of service you would like to use to get your household items from one place to another. The two main services are LTL (Less-Than-Load) Freight and traditional movers.

Traditional Movers vs. LTL (Less-Than-Load)

Traditional movers generally provide a variety of different services and can help take care of things end to end. Many moving companies handle everything from packing and loading services to piano moving and more. These companies sometimes offer white glove services that can be hired to do even more.

When working with traditional movers, they take care of nearly everything but often only transport full households or office moves. Moving individual pieces of furniture and appliances or small shipments may not be in the scope of work that movers offer.

Some moving companies even offer car hauling, which is great for long-distance moves. Long trips can be time-consuming, and there is the potential to damage your vehicle while on the road. Also, if you have multiple vehicles, driving one versus multiple vehicles can ensure the safety of your loved ones.

Pros of Hiring a Moving Company

Moving companies can take care of everything for you, including packing, loading, transporting, unloading, and eventually unpacking your belongings. This enables you to catch your breath and perform other crucial tasks like securing your new house or devoting time to getting to know the neighborhood. For those reasons alone, releasing yourself from the responsibility of moving your stuff is well worth the money.

LTL Freight

Moving companies are a great way to get things from point a to point b, but it is not the only way. LTL or less-than-load freight is a great way to move things across the country, or if you are just trying to move a few items.

LTL is not the typical way people move things. However, it can be just as useful. Let’s demystify the power of LTL Freight.

What Is LTL?

LTL services are offered by many freight companies for customers that do not need to move a full 28-foot freight trailer worth of stuff. Hence the name LTL or Less-Than-Load.

Once a truck picks up your load, it will put it alongside other pallets full of items from other customers. For example, your palletized pieces of furniture may be on the same load as a shipment of coffee for a coffee roasting company. LTL is an efficient way to move things and can be lower cost because of this.

Tips on How to Use LTL

One of the biggest positives of using LTL is the fact that you can ship single pieces of furniture. No one wants to hire an entire moving company just to ship a chair. The process is very simple.

First, you need to get your shipment packaged and ready to go on a pallet. The pallet makes it easy to move from carrier to carrier. If you are moving from a place without a dock, then you will need to coordinate a way to get your package on the truck.

This is typically done using a liftgate, which is a mini hydraulic elevator for your packages. This does typically cost more, but will ensure that your package can be picked up from your house.

Once you have your pallet ready to go, reach out to your chosen freight provider, and they will take care of things from there. It is important to request the right services. If you need your package carried inside or upstairs, make sure to let your freight company know.
